beach boys faq - jon stebbinsOur Beach Boys coverage continues with Jon Stebbins, author of The Beach Boys FAQ - All That's Left to Know About America's Band (Backbeat Books).  The comprehensive book includes bios of every member of the Beach Boys (past and present), including who sang on which song, specifics on the musical gear they used, and even their addresses.  Plus, he gives a profile of the sidemen who played on their records, and provides a list of Beach Boys' TV appearances.  Of course, he devotes an entire chapter to "Your Favorite Vegetable - The Fantastically Freaky and Sad Legend of Smile."  Stebbins is also the author of Dennis Wilson - The Real Beach Boy, and The Lost Beach Boy - The True Story of David Marks.

As you may know, during the recording of The Beach Boys' 3rd album "Surfer Girl", that, for the first time, that The Beach Boys went off and played some shows without Brian, so Brian could stay behind at the studio to finish the album. There has long been a rumor that Brian employed the group "The Survivors"(for whom Brian produced one Capitol single) to help Brian complete the album. One Beach Boys biography book stated that it is "The Survivors"(not The Beach Boys) singing with Brian on the song "Surfer Girl". Is this true? Even if so, the record still sounds great.

That is completely untrue. Its one of those anecdotes that is easily disproved, as the only people on the Surfer Girl single session (as proved by the session tapes and logs) are Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike and David. First shows without Brian were several months prior to the Surfer Girl LP sessions. You should read The Lost Beach Boy book as it explores this subject matter in precise detail.
